The ¶¶Òõ's Charitable Status
The ¶¶Òõ of Reading is an independent corporation with charitable status established by Royal Charter granted in 1926. Its objects, powers and framework of governance are defined in the Charter. The Privy Council approved a revised version of the ¶¶Òõ Charter in 2015. The ¶¶Òõ is an exempt charity (reference X 8145) under the Charities Act 2011 and as such is a charity within the meaning of Para 1 of Schedule 6 to the Finance Act 2010. It is not required to be registered with the Charity Commission but is however subject to the Charity Commission's regulatory powers which are monitored by the Office for Students.
The Council is the governing body of the ¶¶Òõ and in exercising its role and powers undertakes to meet the obligations placed upon the ¶¶Òõ by the founding Charter. The Council has responsibility for the conduct of all of the affairs of the ¶¶Òõ and for the achievement of its mission of educating talented people well, conducting outstanding research, and promoting the responsible application of new knowledge. The Council sets the ¶¶Òõ's strategic direction, ensures compliance with statutory requirements and approves constitutional changes.
